Southampton came bouncing into their first game of the new Championship season, after their second-placed finish in last season’s League 1 table. Brimming with a new-found confidence – and inspired by ex-League 1 rivals and Premier League new-boys Norwich City, who have got there with successive promotions from the third tier – ‘The Saints’ had many reasons to go into the campaign with high hopes.
